Arch of Titus

Bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius
A marble and travertine monument, this arch commemorates the military conquest of Jerusalem by Emperor Titus. This is an early form of the triumphal arch, which awarded successful generals. The unveiling of the arch would have been accompanied by a parade and a feast. A detail of the inner sculpture shows Titus riding a chariot into battle as a woman in armor leads him. This is a well known personification of Rome itself, who was thought to be a female warrior.
