Ishtar Gate

Lion glazed brick detail from the Ishtar Gate
Ishtar was the Babylonian goddess of love and war, taken from the Sumerians who worshipped the same goddess under the name Inanna. The gate is made from glazed brick in blue, yellow, white, and turquoise. Some bricks are molded to form a sort of bas relief. The three types of animals displayed by the gate represent Ishtar (the lion), Marduk (the dragon), Bablyon's patron deity who's associated with magic, wisdom, and water, and Adad (the bull), god of storms.
